Let's talk about abortion

We campaign for the right for abortion lots (which we totally totally agree with - of course), but we don't often talk about what it's like going through an abortion. Today, we're talking about just that!

This week on our podcast, we talk to Giulia about Endo, PCOS, abortion, and all the feelings in between

abortion understand your cycle

Many of us (incl. me) may say, "if I were to get pregnant, I would get an abortion." But what is it really like?

All the people I know who have had an abortion, whether medical or surgical, have struggled with the physical and emotional impact of them. But, I will admit, before I was 25, I didn't know how to hold space for it.

What blows my mind too, is that we still haven't quite normalised it yet. And perhaps that's why we don't know much about the procedure, what it's like, and more? (kind of like menstrual cycles too! )

Or perhaps we're scared of the prospect of abortion, and so protect ourselves by not informing ourselves? I know I was definitely there at once.

We have many unconscious biases around abortions.

But:

  • having an abortion is not shameful

  • having an abortion does not mean you did something silly

  • having an abortion is not her fault

  • having an abortion tough, and we should receive support during it

So many women go through their abortions alone, feeling that they can't really share their experience. In the world that we live in, that's so understandable.

We need to hold more spaces for people to discuss their experiences if they choose to. Sometimes, it's healing.

We need to normalise abortion, by informing ourselves, speaking openly about it, and getting rid of the unconscious biases within us that we may have around abortion.

Thank you to Giulia for leading the charge in our podcast!

Here's to undoing unconscious beliefs that limit women.

Some pod quotes for a little inside view

"I was underestimating what women go through when they choose to get an abortion."

"I still felt a lot of care for what was growing inside of me."

"I undermined everything that I was feeling. [...] Women go through so much, and we should start speaking out more."
